Log burners and wood burning stoves in Devon, fitted properly

Choosing a stove is the fun part. Getting it fitted, lined, certified and legal is the bit that matters. Tell us about the room and the chimney once, and one HETAS-registered installer comes out, looks, and quotes. No ring-around, no sales calls from six firms.

  • One installer, registered with HETAS
  • Work signed off with a Certificate of Compliance

Four rules worth knowing before you buy

It's notifiable work

Fitting a stove counts as building work the council must be told about. A HETAS-registered installer can self-certify it, and you get a certificate.

The certificate

A CO alarm goes in the same room

Approved Document J asks for one whenever a new or replacement solid-fuel stove is installed.

Alarm rules

Ecodesign and dry wood

Stoves sold since 1 January 2022 must meet Ecodesign limits. Small loads of firewood must be certified dry.

Smoke control areas

Parts of Exeter are covered. Plymouth has none. Inside one, wood can only go in a Defra-exempt stove.

Quick answers

Do I need building control for a log burner?

In England, fitting a solid-fuel or wood-burning stove is notifiable. Use a HETAS-registered installer and they self-certify instead of you applying to the council, and you receive a Certificate of Compliance. More

Will my chimney need a liner?

Sometimes. Approved Document J allows faulty flues to be relined, and says a flue may need lining to bring it down to the right size for the stove, since an oversized flue can be unsafe. The installer decides after seeing it. Chimneys and flues

Is my address in a smoke control area?

Parts of Exeter, yes. Plymouth City Council says there are none in Plymouth. Defra's map shows no others in Devon, with the caveat that the map is only a guide, so ask your council. Devon detail
